Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are paper-thin composite resin or porcelain covers that fit over a damaged tooth to change its appearance. They’re a simple way to dramatically improve your smile without undergoing extensive dental work.

Why would I need veneers?

If you don’t like the way your teeth look, veneers can completely transform your smile. Ask the South Indy Dental team about veneers if you have:

  • A chipped tooth
  • Severe tooth discoloration
  • A broken or cracked tooth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth worn by grinding
  • A large tooth gap

Many patients choose veneers to give their teeth a more polished, uniform appearance. These durable restorations can help you achieve a classic Hollywood smile without the time and pain of extensive dental work. Dr. Johnson even offers e.max® lithium disilicate veneers for aesthetically pleasing restorations that are more durable than traditional porcelain veneers.

If you want to reshape your smile for cosmetic reasons, South Indy Dental offers free cosmetic consultations.

How are veneers placed?

The veneer process typically takes two separate appointments. At the first visit, Dr. Johnson removes approximately one millimeter of enamel from your teeth to prepare them for your new veneers. This opens up room for the veneers, so they blend in with the rest of your teeth without looking bulky or unnatural.

During this first appointment, the team also takes impressions of your teeth before the lab creates your veneers. Fabricating custom-made veneers usually takes at least two weeks, during which time you’ll wear temporary veneers.

At your final visit, Dr. Johnson removes the temporary veneers and replaces them with your permanent restorations. Before placing the permanent veneers, the team cleans your teeth and etches the veneers to help them bond to your teeth.

Next, Dr. Johnson places and cements your veneers to your teeth, ensuring they look exactly like your natural teeth. The dental team also light cures the veneers and removes any excess material to create the most natural fit possible. Before you leave the office, the team polishes your veneers and schedules a follow-up visit to make sure they remain comfortable and secure.

You should be able to eat your favorite foods with veneers, just like the rest of your teeth. It’s important to brush and floss regularly and schedule routine cleanings with the South Indy Dental team to keep your veneers strong and healthy. Call or book an appointment online for more information.
